Skill enhancement among women

Skill enhancement among women

What is skill Development?

Skill Development is for determining the skill gaps and overcoming them. Skills are required to define one’s ability and this ability is the sole reason behind the successful implementation of plans.

Skill Development is the process of identification, learning and updating of the skills gap in youth, women,  men and children, providing skilling training & employment benefits to them or helping them in future. Skill development programs aim to recognise the ability of the youth and extend their support by serving them with the proper advice, infrastructure, opportunities, and motivation that help them achieve their aims. Education and skills are necessary for everyone, like these, both qualities are the must for everyone's career. They are the origins behind the economic growth and social development of any country. Therefore, governments are continuously making efforts to provide skill development to the youth with their skilling associates and NGOs around the country. The benefits of Skill Development include increased business profits, improved performance, improved accuracy & quality, improved communication, compliance with rules & regulations, improved recruitment & career opportunities, and development of good customer relations.

Why is it necessary?

India today has one of the majority poplulation as youngsters in the world with more than 62% of the population in the working-age group (15-59 years), and more than 54% of the total population below 25 years of age. In fact, in the next 20 years, the labour force in the industrialised world is expected to decline by 4%, while in India it will increase by 32%. However, current statistics show that only 2% of the total employees in India have completed skills development training.

In today's age of globalisation and the technological era, skill building is an essential mechanism to increase the effectiveness and quality of work for improved productivity and economic growth.

Skill building is a strong tool to empower individuals and improve their social acceptance. It must be complemented by economic growth and employment opportunities to meet the growing aspirations of youth. The challenge lies not only in a huge quantitative expansion of facilities for skill training but also in raising their quality. With the overcoming of the challenge, India can then become the global sourcing hub for skilled employees.

Quoting Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi Independence Day 2014 Speech -

"Today, the world and India need a skilled workforce. If we have to promote the development of our country then our mission has to be `skill development and `Skilled India’. Millions and Millions of Indian youth should acquire the skills which could contribute towards making India a modern country. I also want to create a pool of young people who can create jobs and the ones who are not capable of creating jobs and do not have the opportunities, they must be in a position to face their counterparts in any corner of the world while keeping their heads high by their hard work and their dexterity of hands and win the hearts of people around the world through their skills. We want to go for the capacity building of such young people. My brothers and sisters, having taken a resolve to enhance the skill development at a highly rapid pace, I want to accomplish this."

Illiteracy

In rural areas, girls receive an average of fewer than four years of education only, as girls are supposed to be at home and not be working out according to many households that still have these minds. Numerous studies show that rural women have high levels of fertility and mortality, poor nutritious status, low earning potential, and little autonomy within the household.

The urban female literacy rate is 64 percent and rural women literacy rate is half of it, i.e., 31 percent. As with India as a whole, many states have large rural-urban differences in female literacy. In six of the 24 states, 25 percent or less of the women in rural areas are literate.

Skill enhancement for women in rural areas

Skill building, as a process towards obtaining a job, is something that has been majorly missing in our education system. While private players do make an attempt towards hands-on training, the formal education system is lacking in this regard.

This deficiency, when associated with the trouble women in India generally face when looking for a job, spells threatening consequences. These groups of women that are raised from economically lower or from rural backgrounds, the problems are endless. For these women, physical labour is still the most easily available work. There is a great necessity to properly skill this extremely large workforce so that they can become a major part of the economy through desk-oriented jobs.

Problems faced by rural women in getting a job even after proper skilling:

Even after proper training and skill being imparted to rural women, it is not easy for them to get a job. They face numerous problems, as stated by the TISS SVE Dean:

  • Too much competition, many trained professionals, gender bias, language problems, family issues, long working hours are some of the issues

  • Other problems faced by women include mindset related issues and lack of support from their family

  • Since rural women marry off very early, they shoulder family responsibilities from a very early age, leaving them less time to develop an independent standing career

  • Even after getting a job, many women are paid much less compared to male counterparts in the same field

  • Along with this, women safety is a teething issue that puts many women on a back seat to take a job

Empowerment

Empowering women is important and essential to the health and social development of families, communities and countries.

When women are living safe, fulfilled and productive lives, they can reach their full potential and contribute more than what they do. Contributing their skills to the workforce can raise happier and healthier children and healthy relationships. They  help fuel endurable economies and benefit societies and humankind at large. Women empowerment is one of the key terms for the overall development of society. In the corporate world, women are playing several roles in fields like engineering, medical, and so on. They are not only taking part in the technology fields, but they are also actively participating in security services like the military, police, navy and so on. All these services are taking society to the next level.  But the major drawback is for those women who come from a rural background, as they not only have to work hard but also have to fight the stigma of "WOMEN WORKING IN MEN WORLD". If you find any woman who is serving their role in the development of society, then you can appreciate their work and if you find a woman who is fighting for her rights, Support her! let her know she is NOT ALONE.
