World Thalassemia Day: Celebrating Progress in Treatment and Raising Awareness for a Better Future.

Thalassemia is an agentic blood disorder that affects the production of haemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Individuals with thalassemia have reduced production of haemoglobin, leading to anaemia and other complications.

There are two types of thalassemia: Alpha and Beta thalassemia. Alpha thalassemia occurs when there is a problem with the production of alpha - globin protein chains, while Beta thalassemia occurs when there is a problem with the production of beta - globin protein chains. The severity of thalassemia can range from mild to severe. People with mild thalassemia may not require any treatment whereas severe forms require blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants, or other therapies to manage their conditions.

Every year on the 8th of May World Thalassemia Day is observed to increase public and political awareness of thalassemia, to support and strengthen patients' lifelong battles against this deadly blood condition, to remember those who have passed away, and to reaffirm our commitment to keep fighting until a definitive treatment is discovered and this year the theme is “Be Aware. Share. Care: Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassemia Care Gap.’’

According to the Union Health Minister, there are around 270 million thalassemia patients in the world and India has the largest number of children with thalassemia Major in the world, with about 1 to 1.5 lakh, and about 10000 to 15000 children having thalassemia Major born every year.

There are ways to raise awareness about thalassemia and its impact on individuals and communities. Some ways include:

  1. Educating the public

By educating people about thalassemia, its causes, symptoms, and treatments, we can help raise awareness about the disorder and reduce the stigma associated with it.

  1. Screening programs

It is important to screen individuals, especially those who are at high risk, for thalassemia. This can help detect the disorder early and allow for timely interventions to prevent complications.

  1. Support groups

Support groups can provide a safe and supportive space for individuals with thalassemia and their families to share their experiences, learn from each other, and find emotional support.

  1. Fundraising

Funds raised can help support research into new treatments, promote awareness, and improve access to care for individuals with thalassemia.

Even people can help thalassemia patients by:

  1. Blood donation

Thalassemia patients require regular blood transfusions to manage their condition. Donating blood can help ensure that there is an adequate supply of blood for these patients.

  1. Bone marrow donation:

For some thalassemia patients, a bone marrow transplant can be a curative treatment. People can register as bone marrow donors and potentially save a life.

  1. Providing emotional support

Thalassemia can significantly impact patients and their families. Providing emotional support through listening, offering encouragement, and connecting them with support groups can help improve their quality of life.

Through donations and public awareness, the Child Help Foundation and Filaantro, a crowdfunding partner, have assisted 2879 kids with thalassemia major. We are pleased that we were able to save these children's lives, and with your aid, we will keep on assisting children in need.
