WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY

One of the WHO(World Health Organization)'s international public health days is WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY. The Seventy-second World Health Assembly was formed in 2019, "Global action on patient safety."

 

The goals are to raise public awareness and improve understanding on a worldwide scale and promote international cooperation and member-state action to improve patient safety and lessen patient damage. WHO urges to “Act now for safe and respectful childbirth!” with the theme “Safe maternal and newborn care”. 

 

The WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY builds on a series of successful global ministerial summits on patient safety that were initiated in 2016 in London as well as the tenacious advocacy of leaders from all sectors, including politicians, patient advocates, patient safety specialists, and international public health leaders.

 

The biennial WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY will provide experts, consumers, and managers of healthcare services the chance to unite on a platform and show compassion and solidarity for making healthcare safer.

 

At some point in their lives, EVERYONE IN THE WORLD will take drugs to either treat or prevent illness. However, when delivered, prescribed, stored, or monitored improperly, drugs can occasionally result in catastrophic injury.

 

The two most common reasons for preventable injury in the medical field worldwide are unsafe pharmaceutical practices and medication errors. Medication errors occur when inadequate medication systems and human factors, such as staff exhaustion or neglect, staff shortages, and a lack of training, have an impact on the safety of the patient. At the same time, they are being treated by a medical professional. 

 

Serious patient injury, disability, and even death may ensue from this.

 

 

 

Every day, 810 women die from preventable conditions associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Additionally, roughly 6700 infant fatalities per day, or 47% of all deaths of children under five, occur. 

 

Nearly 40% of the 2 million stillbirths that occur each year do so during labour. There is a substantial burden of risks and harm that pregnant women and new mothers experience as a result of hazardous care, which is exacerbated by the disruption of crucial health services.

 

WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY 2022 GOALS

• ADVOCATE immediate action to enhance drug safety and raise global awareness of the significant burden of pharmaceutical-related damage caused by medication errors and unsafe practices.
• ENGAGE important partners and stakeholders in the initiatives to stop pharmaceutical errors and lessen harm from improper use of medications.
• EMPOWER patients and their families to take an active role in the medication's safe use.
• Implementing the WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm at a SCALE-UP level.
• INCREASE public understanding of issues related to baby and mother safety, particularly during childbirth.
• IMPROVE maternal and neonatal safety by involving diverse stakeholders and implementing smart, cutting-edge techniques.
• INCREASE efforts, reach the unreached, and provide safe maternal and newborn care, particularly during childbirth, call for immediate and sustained steps from all stakeholders.
• Encourage the implementation of best practices at the point of care to eliminate unnecessary risks and harm to all pregnant women and newborns.
