World Liver Day: Why Liver is Crucial for a Healthy Lifestyle

Annually, the 19th of April is celebrated as World Liver Day to raise awareness about the importance of liver health. It was started by The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in 2010 to commemorate the founding of the establishment.

The liver is one of the most crucial and vital organs in the human body. It performs more than 500 functions, some of which include processing nutrients, filtering toxins, and producing bile to help digest fats.

On this World Liver Day, we would like to shed light on the importance of liver, what you can do to take care of your liver and how to recognise signs of liver malfunction.

The liver produces a substance called bile, which is responsible for converting fats into fuel which our body can use. It also controls blood sugar, produces vitamins, regulates blood at the right amount of thickness and keeps muscles from tremoring.

Hence, it is extremely important to take care of your liver. One of the most harmful ingredients to the liver is alcohol. So it is important to be mindful about your liquor consumption. You also need to stay away from toxins and pesticides. Practising safe sex, getting vaccinated and washing your hands can spare you from harmful diseases like hepatitis. Lastly, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.

Liver damage can be detrimental to your health and well-being. It is important to consult a doctor upon experiencing any symptoms. If you experience yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, belly pain and swelling, swelling in legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool, constant tiredness, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite or easy bruising, it is better to get checked by the doctors immediately.

Depending on the severity, liver diseases can cause serious complications, including bleeding and increased pressure in the brain. You might require immediate hospitalization. Ignoring liver diseases for a long time can also lead to terminal illnesses or even death.

A doctor may suggest you change your lifestyle if you experience liver issues. These might include losing weight or not drinking alcohol. These changes often are part of a medical program that includes watching liver function. Surgery or medicines might also be prescribed. In the most grave circumstances, a liver transplant might be needed.

Filaantro recognizes the severity of liver issues. Along with Child Help Foundation, Filaantro regularly raises funds for people battling liver diseases. We also conduct awareness sessions on World Liver Day to educate people about the liver.
