The brain is one of the most vital organs in our human body. It is the driving force of humans, and responsible for almost all its functions, including thinking, sensing, body movement and controller of behaviour.
22nd of July has been marked as ‘World Brain Day’ to raise awareness of neurological disorders and the prevention of brain disorders. The first World Brain Day was celebrated in 2014 after the suggestion was proposed at the World Congress of Neurology (WCN) Council of Delegates meeting on the 22nd of September 2013.
On this day, various organizations try to promote brain health by conducting workshops, discussions, sharing experiences on public forums and social media to boost the morale of patients, fundraising events, and rallies.
In 2019, the largest contributors to the total neurological disorder in India were stroke (37·9%), headache disorders (17·5%), epilepsy (11·3%), cerebral palsy (5·7%), and encephalitis (5·3%). These statistics reveal that India needs more awareness about neurological disorders.
So, how can you prevent neurological disorders?
Neurological disorders can be non-accidental or accidental. It is extremely important to maintain a healthy sleep cycle to prevent neurological disorders, seven hours of sleep should be observed on a regular basis. Two hours of exercise and reduced screen time can be beneficial as well. Stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine should not be taken six hours before sleep and a healthy diet consisting of green vegetables, beans, seafood, nuts, and seeds should be followed.
Precautionary methods like wearing seatbelts and helmets should be taken into consideration while driving, and immediate medical attention should be taken, if you experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The question that arises is how can we identify neurological disorders, and when should we go for medical help. It is advised to seek professional help after experiencing symptoms like Weakness or paralysis, Abnormal movements, such as tremors or difficulty walking, Loss of balance, Difficulty swallowing or feeling "a lump in the throat", Seizures or episodes of shaking and apparent loss of consciousness (nonepileptic seizures) and Episodes of unresponsiveness
Signs and symptoms that affect the senses may include, numbness or loss of the touch sensation, speech problems, such as the inability to speak or slurred speech, vision problems, such as double vision or blindness, hearing problems or deafness and cognitive difficulties involving memory and concentration.
