What is E-Fashion? How Can It Help Our Environment?

What if I told you that one of the biggest enemies of mother nature is hiding inside your closet? But it is true as the fashion industry produces more than 10% of global carbon dioxide output more than international flights, and the shipping industry combined. It is responsible for 300 million tons of plastic produced each year.

Only a pair of jeans cost 3,781 litres of water to produce, and the industry is responsible for four to ten per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it is only expected to grow with the rise in demand in the world of fast fashion, where people are purchasing goods that are designed to be consumed quickly at cheap prices.

The fast fashion world depletes earth’s natural resources at an alarming rate, and also exploits workers around the world. So in short, your wardrobe is not only killing mother nature but at the same time is creating inhumane conditions in third-world countries.

While we don’t blame anyone for wanting to own fine garbs, at the same time it is important to be mindful of our own purchasing habits. So how can you ensure that your wallet doesn’t destroy the planet?

Introducing Sustainable Fashion! Sustainable Fashion is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in certain ways that are mindful of the conditions of the environment. Mostly, by using recycled materials, biodegradable dyes, and manufacturing patterns to create zero waste.

In 2016, Emma Watson turned heads by donning an outfit at MetGala, that was manufactured from recycled plastic bottles. The outfit was so stunning, that one couldn’t tell the difference between clothes manufactured from regular materials and recycled materials.

So, here is how you can be a witch and contribute to the global environmental crisis with your wallet or purses.

One of the best things you can do is to shop from e-fashion retailers like NoNasties, Terra Tribe, OSHADI, etc. These companies produce apparel from recycled materials and use renewable sources of energy like solar and wind power, which helps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Another way you can heal mother nature is by purchasing second-hand clothes or renting outfits for big occasions, this allows the outfit to be constantly used and in turn reduce wastage.

Supporting brands which have vowed to reduce their carbon footprint is also recommended when it comes to promoting e-fashion. Not only will you be making good choices, but you will also be encouraging other brands to adopt similar models of production.

One must also make sure that one consumes vegan fashion, which is fashion devoid of animal materials like leather and wool. A Kanpur-based start-up called Phool, is using a flower called Fleather to create plant-based leather. It uses materials from floral waste generated from the temple grounds.

aking good care of your clothes is also a good way to reduce wastage, and ensure that it doesn’t end up in the nearest dumpster ground, where they will destroy the soil for centuries to come.

So, with this new year let’s vow to make our wardrobes greener and more efficient for the environment.
