This year, the people of India are celebrating the 75th Independence day to celebrate the spirit of free India. Every year we celebrate Independence day on 15th August where we hoist the national flag, sing the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” by Rabindranath Tagore followed by the national song “Vande Mataram” written by Bankincham Chatterjee. For some people, Independence day is all about spending quality time with our family, or about watching the parade taking place in the vicinity of the Red Fort in Delhi on DD national. But do we know what is the truth behind celebrating this day and not just taking it as a ‘holiday’ to chill?
Let us take a look at our country’s history and understand what exactly is ‘Independence Day '? On Independence day our country finally got free after being ruled region by region for a thousand years by the rulers like Alexander, Arabs, Mughals, Britishers, and other cruel rulers. India was never free as a whole country. But after centuries of struggle, this time India got freedom from every kind of dictatorship on 15th August 1947. The freedom fight was led by many leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra bose, Lokmanya Tilak, Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh, and many more. Though in this struggle we lost numerous soldiers and people for our history, their pain and sacrifices made the fight stronger and more valuable. During the partition at the time of Independence, important parts of our nation were lost, now known as independent countries of ‘Pakistan’ and ‘Bangladesh’.
Though the Britishers left our country, they made an impressive impression as they introduced systems of modern trading, the education system, railway system, started economic flow, and the most important concept of modern technology. They made these changes to strengthen their rule in India but after we got freedom these changes made a positive impact in our country. Following their steps, inspiration was taken from their governing system and a secular government was established where each person had the chance to choose who they follow and who they think can fight for their rights. A set of rules was laid in the form of a Constitution written by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar which was officially followed after 2.5 years on 26th January 1950 which we call the Republic day.
Now, coming back to why we celebrate it? We celebrate it as a tribute to the hundreds of freedom fighters who lost in this war of freeing our motherland and as a remembrance of how it took centuries to be free from the clutches of rulers. There were thousands of people who fought bravely for the freedom of our country but their names are not recorded in our history but their contribution was equally important. We hold respect in our hearts for these freedom fighters, and a lesson we should always remember that our ancestors gave us is never to lose hope and never to give up on fighting for our rights.
“Never forget that we are independent because of the sacrifices our ancestors made.”
