Often viewed from a negative lens, Social Media has been held responsible for corrupting the youth and having an awful influence on the population. While that view does hold true to some extent. It does not paint the full picture.
Social Media is an instrument. One can either use it to spread hatred or use it to give out quality content, inspire the masses, and even start their own business ventures.
The #MeToo movement is one of the prominent examples of social media having a positive impact. Through the hashtag, thousands of women spoke up about inherent abuse that runs rampant in various industries like entertainment, sports, corporations etc.
Social Media can be used to support various causes. To make people aware of the power of social media, 15th July has been marked as ‘Social Media Giving Day’. This day encourages influencers and regular people to donate to the causes which are closest to their hearts.
In fact, various non-profit organizations have turned to social media to grow their organizations and drive more people to their causes. A Plethora of major NGOs have their presence on social media and normally use celebrity influence to garner more followers for their causes.
Social Media can also lead to healthy and educated discussions about various social issues. A lot of new generations learnt about toxic masculinity, mental health, and LGBTQ+ issues through social media engagement. Social Media gives a platform to previously suppressed voices to speak out and tell the world their own stories. A lot of racial and religious minorities, women and queer people have used social media to talk about generational trauma and institutionalized issues that have impacted their lives.
Businesses can also be promoted through social media. Various start-ups capitalize on the power of social media to attract more customers through creative marketing campaigns.
However, it is also important to be safe while using social media. Various scammers and hateful groups use social media for their own deceiving purposes. Many young malleable people are being influenced by hateful groups, and the algorithms feed our own negative biases by showcasing more hateful content.
Therefore, as a parent, it is important to keep track of children’s social media activity, but also respect their privacy at the same time. Instagram has its own parental supervision setting which allows parents to supervise their child’s social media usage.

We use social media to fund medical treatment of children and other causes and create a positive influence on society. We also regularly post about our activities to make people aware of societal issues, which harm various communities.
