National Sports Day -commemorating the legendary Major Dhyan Chand

National Sports Day is a momentous occasion that holds a special place in the hearts of sports enthusiasts across India. In India, August 29 is commemorated as National Sports Day each year. The day commemorates the birthday of Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, recognised as one of the sport's all-time greats. The inaugural National Sports Day was marked on August 29, 2012, according to a declaration ratified in 2012.  

 

Major Dhyan Chand’s journey legacy in the world of sports is unparalleled. Born on August 29, 1905, his journey in the sports world is undoubtedly inspirational to many sports enthusiasts. His remarkable talent in the field of Hockey boosted India’s growth too. His exceptional skills and talents earned him the nickname “The Wizard”. Major Dhyan Chand's services to Indian hockey earned him a place in athletic history as well as honours for the country.

 

The hockey player competed for India's hockey team, which represented India in the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1936 and brought home gold medals for the country.  From 1928 until 1964, India won the hockey competition in seven of the eight Olympics, illustrating his influence beyond these triumphs.

 

In 185 matches across his domestic and international careers, Chand scored 570 goals, according to his memoirs, while playing internationally from 1926 until 1949. The Indian government gave him the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in the nation, the same year he retired from the army with the rank of major.

 

To increase awareness of the importance of sports and physical exercise in daily life, National Sports Day is also observed. Teams and players receive several distinctions and medals from the Indian government. At a ceremony conducted at the Presidential Palace, the President of India gives several prizes to sports stars in recognition of their services to sports. On this day, prominent sports figures receive important distinctions including the Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Awards.

The day gives us a chance to consider the virtues of self-control, tenacity, and cooperation that sports instill in us.
