Dad: Every child’s first superhero

The underappreciated role

Mothers are always saluted for their sacrifices and are known as the pillar of the family but we tend to forget to mention the role of the father who is equally important in the family. Mothers make numerous sacrifices that we know of but fathers too have their share of sacrifices that go unnoticed. People say that when a woman gives birth, it’s also the moment when she is reborn. People neglect the fact that it is not just the rebirth of the woman who just turned into a mother, but also it is the rebirth of the man who just turned into a father. Though mothers carry the baby in their womb for 9 months and go through tremendous pain to welcome the infant in this world, fathers too carry their babies in their heart which aches to meet the little one from the time they get to know about the pregnancy. During pregnancy, the mother-to-be undergoes a lot of physical discomforts like morning sickness, body pain, and discomfort which her partner tries to assuage by making her feel comfortable and happy in various ways. Right from taking care of her 2 a.m. cravings, doing household chores to buying her short eats during the visit to the hospital or for regular checkups.

Responsibility

Fathers play a crucial role in the development of a young baby into a mature adult. Children with involved fathers are said to be more empathetic and academically more successful. Right from when the baby is born and holds the little version of himself or his spouse, his arms feel heavy, and so do his shoulders knowing that now, he is responsible for the newborn’s life. Because of the responsibility that he feels towards the baby, he spends most of the time working hard to give the baby a financially secure life and gets very less time to spend with the little one which is often misunderstood as being an absent father shrugging away from responsibilities. He is unavailable during the precious little moments when the baby turns on his/her back, starts to crawl, walk, talk for the first time which he feels utterly sorry for but feels proud of the notorious tot’s achievements. Though his absence leaves a hollowness in those memories, he always makes up for it by spending quality time whenever he gets free from work.

Although he is tired from the exhausting day at work, he never denies giving piggyback or airplane rides. His weekends are marked and dedicated to making his child happy. He relives his childhood through his kid. Sometimes he yells when he gets irritated but soon after, he makes up for it. In front of the world, he wears armor showing his strength keeping his guard up all the time but lowers his guard down and acts like a baby himself when it comes to his child.

Dependence

While children are dependent on their mother for emotional support and leniency, a father is the one who inculcates values and discipline in them. Children always look up to their dad for emotional, financial, and physical security. He barely believes in saying ‘I Love You’ to his children but finds different ways to show his loving emotion, sometimes it's a kiss on the forehead, sometimes it's a hug and sometimes it's the way his eyes admire you. In many situations, he is too strict but deep down he is just worried about protecting his child from the evil world. However strict he might be, every child’s first superhero is his or her dad. In the lives of most people, fathers are the ones who have held their hand while walking around, taught them to ride a bicycle, played the games of cricket and football with them, and much more. Whatever the situation might be, dads are the ones who are almost always supportive of the child’s demands which are at times unreasonable too.

Father-Daughter Relationship

Daughters are more attached to their fathers than to their mothers. A strong and healthy father-daughter relationship leads to the daughter being self-confident and stronger to face the world. It makes her believe in herself and others. Though she knows her dad is strict, she knows her ways around to manage him with puppy faces in getting the work done. She knows that whatever happens, her dad will always be available as rock-solid support.

Fathers often create a gold standard for future romantic relationships in their daughter’s life. The way the father treats his spouse and other females greatly influences her expectations in relationships and her being treated in general. Girls often look for the qualities of their father in their partner. Even after moving away from her father, the bond between them never changes.

Father-Son Relationship

Unlike daughters, sons are more attached to their mothers in comparison to their fathers. When they are young, the son often loves his father and shares every little detail with him but as the kid grows older, the relationship between him and his father grows complicated. During childhood, a son idolizes his father and wants to be like his superhero. But during his teenage years, he builds his own opinions which clash with his father’s opinion and it mostly leads to arguments and it tends to create a rift between them. Though later, when the little boy grows into a mature adult, he gets his father’s perspective, starts to understand his views, and the father-son relationship enters a comfort zone. Even in a father-son relationship, the way the father treats the women in his life greatly influences how the son is going to treat women in the future.

The role of a father in a child’s life greatly impacts the child’s personality. A fathers’ role is underappreciated and the father too deserves the respect that we give to mothers. This Father’s Day, show love to your father and thank him for every sacrifice he makes for you.

“Dear Dad, no matter how much older I get, you will always be my superhero.”
