“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” said the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. However, this very goal is often ignored in the cultural zeitgeist. We are told to ignore our well-being and the increasing nihilism in our society puts virtue on suffering, instead of contentment.
To promote happiness, The Secret Society of Happy People started ‘Admit You’re Happy Day’ in 1999. Which later became a month-long celebration called ‘Happiness Happens Month’ in the year 2000, selecting the month of August for the celebration to be held. The organization was founded by Pamela Gail Johnson in the year 1998.
Before starting, it is essential to differentiate between happiness and pleasure. Happiness is a feeling of satisfaction and contentment with your life, while pleasure is more in-the-moment and limited experience. In simple words, happiness is more permanent, and pleasure is temporary.
While precursors of happiness generally are income, physical status, experience of positive emotions etc. But the main key to happiness is social relationships. We tend to be happier if we have a more positive relationship with our spouses, children, friends and other family members.
But does that mean people who live alone are less happy?
Far from it, one can live alone and at the same time find meaning and fulfilment in their work and their relationships with friends and extended family members.
So why is happiness important?
Happier people tend to be more successful in multiple domains of life like work, marriage, friendship etc. They tend to be healthier and charitable and often come with a robust support system.
Happy people also serve as positive role models and have an easier time, as optimism is a great weapon to battle through life. Adding to their positive life experience, they enrich the lives of others by engaging in meaningful activities and conversations.
Most importantly, people who are satisfied with their lives, live longer and are more productive and creative members of society.
We get that this blog might sound preachy and even idealistic. There are a lot of people who cannot find happiness due to circumstances they cannot get out of. Most people are often stuck in a job that doesn’t help them find meaning, or have a hard time finding the right people to connect with.
There are some tips that can help such people find happiness. But note that this advice might not serve all, and it is crucial to experiment by yourselves.
You can take time out of your day to engage in activities that cost minimal to no money. Some activities like visiting the library, exploring your city, cooking, and exercising without a gym can enrich your life. You can also find fulfilment in volunteering, developing a positive mindset and exploring new hobbies.
Filaantro recognises the importance of happiness and tries to spread it to everyone by helping them with their education, health, and nutritional needs. Filaantro also visits orphanages, old age homes and other such institutes to conduct fun activities with them.
