Empowering the Future, Celebrating World Youth Skills Day

World Youth Skills Day is an international observance celebrated annually on the 15th of July to mention the significance of developing skills among young people worldwide. The event aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by today’s youth and the need for more significant support and investment in their development. 

On November 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly established World Youth Skills Day in response to a resolution proposed by Sri Lanka and backed by many other nations. On July 15, 2015, the inaugural World Youth Skills Day was observed. "Skilling teachers, trainers, and youth for a transformative future" is the theme of World Youth Skills Day in 2023. World Youth Skills Day in 2023 focuses on the crucial role that educators such as teachers, trainers, and others play in preparing young people for the workforce and for civic engagement. On World Youth Skills Day, let's come together to acknowledge the potential of young people as change agents and pledge to provide them with the opportunity and skills they need to create a successful and sustainable future for all. The objectives of World Youth Skills Day include:

1. Promoting Skills Development: The importance of learning skills necessary for the job, entrepreneurship, and personal growth is emphasised on this day. It attempts to motivate young people to pursue lifelong learning and pick up useful skills necessary for employment in the contemporary workforce.
2. Bridging the Skill Gap: The skills gap between the supply and demand of trained labour is highlighted on World Youth Skills Day. It emphasises the need to match educational and training programmes with market demands to lower unemployment rates and promote economic growth.     
3. Enhancing Youth Job Opportunities: The event emphasises giving young people the knowledge and abilities they need to improve their employability. It emphasises the value of training programmes, internships, and vocational training as efficient routes to get real-world experience and enter the workforce.
4. Recognizing Youth Contributions: World Youth Skills Day celebrates the abilities, ingenuity, and creativity that young people offer to the workforce. It gives individuals a place to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to a variety of sectors while also motivating them to keep improving their talents.
5. Advocating for Youth Empowerment: The day serves as an advocacy platform to raise awareness among policymakers, educators, employers, and society at large about the importance of investing in youth skills development. It calls for collaborative efforts to create supportive environments that empower young people to thrive in their chosen fields.
