May 7 finds a special significance globally and annually as it marks the birth anniversary of the exceptional literary icon, Rabindranath Tagore. Widely celebrated as Rabindra Jayanti, this day is also popularly addressed as Ponchishe Boishakh since it falls on the 25th day of the Bengali month Boishakh. His father, Debendranath Tagore, was a renowned philosopher and social reformer, while his mother, Sarada Devi, instilled spiritual principles in him. Tagore's early years were impacted by the rich tapestry of Bengali culture, which included poetry, music, and philosophy. These formative influences paved the way for his diverse inventiveness and profound understanding of the human predicament.

Tagore established Santiniketan, which subsequently became Visva-Bharati University. This school sought to combine the best of Indian and Western educational ideals. Tagore believed in a comprehensive education that encouraged creativity and critical thinking. Tagore's writing career blossomed. He authored poems, short tales, novels, essays, and plays in Bengali. His writings frequently addressed issues of nature, spirituality, and the human experience. One of his most famous works is "Gitanjali," a collection of poems that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Apart from writing, Tagore was an accomplished painter and composer. He produced nearly 2,000 songs known as Rabindra Sangeet, which combined classical Indian music with Western elements.
