Every year on the 21st of November World Television Day is celebrated, Philo Taylor Farnsworth was an American inventor who built the first electric television in 1927. November 21 was declared World Television Day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1996. The first-ever World Television Forum took place in 1996 at the United Nations on November 21 and 22. The significance of television is in drawing attention to key issues and themes that impact people all over the world. The occasion is used to emphasise the effect of television on social, economic, and political events. It also acknowledges television's importance in giving information and education, facilitating cultural interchange, and creating a greater understanding of various nations.

One of television's distinguishing features is its capacity to transcend cultural divides and build understanding among varied cultures. International channels, travel documentaries, and cultural programmes help us to learn about the diversity of various civilizations while also fostering tolerance and appreciation for diversity. World Television Day serves as a reminder of the value of cross-cultural ties in creating a more integrated and harmonious world.

Television is a very effective instrument for education and information distribution. Educational programmes, documentaries, and news coverage all help us comprehend the world and give insights into a variety of topics. Television is a key source of information in many regions of the world, making it an important medium for increasing literacy and awareness. Even during the pandemic many rural places where network connectivity wasn’t available, TVs were used for online classes.

Excessive and extended television viewing can have a variety of negative impacts on physical and mental health. Excessive screen time, particularly when combined with sedentary behaviour, is linked to an increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and disturbed sleep patterns. Prolonged exposure to violent or disturbing television programming may result in increased stress and desensitisation. Excessive screen time can also cause eye strain, headaches, and other bodily discomforts. The continual flood of information and stimulation from television can contribute to concentration problems, poor academic achievement, and a bad influence on social connections. To prevent these potential adverse effects and enhance general well-being, it is critical to strike a balance and practice conscious intake of television programming.

On World Television Day, let us pause to recognise the immense influence that television has on our lives. Television, whether through news, entertainment, or instructional programmes, is a source of inspiration, knowledge, and connection. As we embrace the digital era, let us consider our role as consumers and artists in ensuring that television remains a force for positive change and enlightenment.
