According to the FAO’s Global Forest Assessment, forests cover 31% of the world’s total land area. For the ecosystem and our everyday life, forests are crucial for a variety of reasons. These are the fundamental living forms that preserve the biodiversity of the planet, which is necessary for economic growth, the diversity of life forms, human subsistence, and environmental adaptive responses.
Moreover, forests are essential because they regulate the water cycle, maintain the climate, and serve as a habitat for countless species of life. Below are the main supporting arguments for the significance of forests.
The wilderness however significant, is also serenely beautiful. It is home to millions of species, flora and fauna, kinds of vegetation, and various tribes of people. Life in the woods is beautiful but full of challenges for every being. Bushes, plants, trees, plants, and flowers all play a vital role and maintaining ecological balance.
To celebrate these beautiful and significant forests, United Nations marked 21st March as the International Day of Forests in its General Assembly in November 2018. Since then, numerous occasions have been held every year to commemorate and promote awareness of the value of all kinds of forests, as well as trees outside of forests, for both the present and the future.
But in recent years, these forests have faced many challenges to the point that it has come to the forest’s existence. We all care about the status of our forests since they are home to 80% of all terrestrial biodiversity and because their destruction causes the extinction of numerous species every year.
Here are a few ways to celebrate the International Day of Forests
The best and foremost way of celebrating the day is planting some trees. These days various NGOs initiate tree plantation drives where you can volunteer to plant. An advantage of being a part of these drives is that you don’t have to give a life-long commitment to care for the trees as most of it is done by the NGO itself.
Hiking or taking a leisurely stroll through a local forest might be another way to observe the International Day of Forests.
If you're not in the mood for physical activity, take a few minutes to consider the options that you can do to stop the destruction of so many trees. Some options comprise recycling used paper, renting books from the library rather than buying them, and, of course, imitating these actions for the younger ones around you so they follow the same.
The Bottom Line…
International Day of Forests is a day to raise awareness about the current situation of deforestation, plant more trees to increase vegetation and furthermore, celebrate and be grateful for their existence. They give us multiple things that help us survive. It is important to let the younger generations understand that the woods and forests are extremely important for our survival. They carry life with them and give birth to new ones as well. So, how are you celebrating the International Day of Forests?
