Care Day: The Importance of Adopting in the World

Care Day is a celebration of children and young people with care e xperience. This group includes children and young people who are or were cared for by foster carers, or other family members, and those who live in children’s homes. It is celebrated on 16th February every year

The day was started in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2016 across five children’s rights charities:

  • Voice of Young People in Care (Northern Ireland)
  • Become (England)
  • Empowering People in Care (Ireland)
  • Voices from Care (Wales)
  • Who Cares? Scotland (Scotland)

We have seen numerous stories of children getting a new life after being taken into foster care or getting adopted.

Angelina Jolie with her adopted and biological children Filaantro

The famed film actress, Angelina Jolie, once said

“When I was growing up, I wanted to adopt, because I was aware there were kids that didn't have parents.”

True to her words, she has adopted three children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. Giving those children a new home and support which probably would have been difficult.

Transformation of Hope in Foster Care Filaantro

Another inspiring story went viral on the internet when Danish aid worker Anja Ringgren Lovén gave water to a child who was abandoned for being a ‘witch’. Anja decided to name him Hope. After Hope was taken into a foster home run by Anja and her husband, David Emmanuel Umem, Hope’s transformation became remarkable, showcasing how kindness and compassion can do wonders.

In this blog piece, we are going to list down some benefits of adopting a child and encourage more people to choose adoption.

  1. Support and Resources

While foster homes and orphanages do their best. There is little they can do when they are burdened with so many mouths to feed. Hence, most children in orphanages are limited by their circumstances. Adoption eases the burden of orphanages and provides a child with support that would help them to thrive.

  1. Helping a Child Get a Family

Children in orphanages are robbed of familial bonds and love. Adopting gives them a chance to experience the love just like every other child. The love and care they receive would help them to grow into a kind and compassionate human being.

  1. Safe Home and Neighbours

According to a statistic, 25% of children will be involved in some sort of crime after leaving the foster care system. Adopting not only gives a child a good family but also gives them a safe home and neighbourhood to grow in. This makes them less likely to turn to crimes.

  1. Gives Them Access to Good Health and Education

Adopted children are more likely to have access to a good healthcare system and education. In fact, the support system provided by parents makes them less likely to get into health issues.

  1. Attention from Parents

According to a survey, 73% of adopted children between the ages of 0 and 5 are sung to or told stories every day. This kind of love and attention is neglected in the orphanage system. When parents and children regularly share meals together, it connects families, positively influences adolescents’ nutrition habits, and can positively impact children’s behaviour.

Filaantro regularly provides care to children. Filaantro, along with their crowdfunding partner, Child Help Foundation, has positively impacted the lives of 46,58,052.
