Bridging Worlds for Children in Need: Celebrating International Day of Sign Language

Everyone needs to be able to express their emotions. Without it, we might be unable to communicate our feelings and thoughts. It is a component of human interaction and aids in developing close relationships. Unfortunately, a lot of people have trouble verbally expressing themselves. In these situations, sign language aids with communication. Sign language helps people become more culturally aware and benefits its users intellectually.

To protect these, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Sign Language every year on September 23rd to raise awareness about the importance of sign language and advocate for the rights of deaf individuals. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. Therefore, raising awareness about the importance of such languages becomes essential.

For many hearing-impaired people, sign language is their main form of visual and gestural communication. It provides a robust and intricate linguistic system that enables efficient articulation of thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Every culture and location has its sign language, much like every spoken language, representing the diversity of human expression and communication. Sign language is a significant means of communication for kids with hearing loss, which is also crucial to their growth and social integration. It fills the communication gap between the deaf community and the outside world, allowing deaf people to communicate, learn, and interact with others.

One of the main goals of the International Day of Sign Language is to promote the inclusion of deaf people in society and their rights. It demands better healthcare, better educational opportunities, and more accessibility for hearing-impaired people. We can eliminate communication obstacles and guarantee that everyone has equal access to information and options by recognising and adopting sign language.

As an individual, we can also be involved in understanding sign languages by taking the initiative to learn some fundamental signs to communicate with those who are deaf. A more inclusive and inviting atmosphere may be created by just understanding basic gestures. Informing people in the community about the value of sign language encourages the availability of sign language lessons and provides accessibility for the deaf community in companies, public places, and schools. Lastly, to support the cause and learn more about deaf culture and communication.

The International Day of Sign Language provides a potent platform promoting the hearing-impaired community's rights to inclusion, linguistic variety, and equality. We can create a more inclusive society where everyone has equal access to knowledge and opportunities by recognising and promoting sign languages.
