Our home is the place where we feel the safest, warm and most comfortable. We adore our home so much that we maintain it clean, organise it ourselves, and frequently renovate it. We often make plans to shift from one house to a bigger one, that has more space, upgraded
facilities and all of the things that lacks in the existing one.
Unfortunately, a lot of times, a lack of funds prevent us from doing so, as you know the sky-high prices of land and houses these days. The average middle-class person must spend all of their savings, take up home loans, and still have a significant sum of money left over to pay for their dream home. At such times, building a dream home seems blurry.
Shaijumon, a carpenter from Kollam, Kerala lived in a small, congested house with just one room for many years. There was no room for sunshine to enter and the house had poor ventilation. Shaijumon's family had a dream of living in a bigger, spacious house with all the necessary facilities.
However, financial constraints prevented them from owning this kind of house and the dream remained a dream for a longer time.
A Dream Come True
But, it was recently, this dream of having a bigger, better house came true. Guess how?
A crowdfunding campaign was initiated to raise funds for building Shaijumon's new house. Ego Design Studio an architecture firm based in Thiruvananthapuram designed this house as part of their social responsibility initiative. Many other kind-hearted individuals and organizations helped in both monetary and non-monetary ways.
Some donated money, some contributed with raw materials while a few offered physical labour free of cost. The work began at full throttle with everyone's valuable contributions, and within a few weeks, Shaijumon's dream dwelling was built.
What Does The Double-Story Success Look Like?
The house faces a paddy field on the east with bright sunlight entering in. It has a breathtaking view. This splendid home, which measures 1050 square feet, includes a living room, dining room, kitchen with a work area, three bedrooms, and a balcony. The family's initial budget was to build a house of 500 square feet only. But with generous support through crowdfunding and other donations, 1000 square feet were added to the previously planned area of the house.
There is only a walking path to the house. Hence, getting the building supplies to the property was rather challenging. All of Shaijumon's craftsmanship was done by him, giving his home a unique touch. Additionally, his coworkers from other projects joined him to assist Shaijumon in finishing the house.
To reduce costs, only half of the ceiling is cement-proofed. The remaining area has been paved with metals. The roofing sheet and cement proofing could only be done by the family. Other people donated most of the construction supplies.
This impressive house is built with a budget of 10 Lakhs rupees only. It is a perfect instance of 'growing house' which can be elaborated as and when the owner has money. The walls are constructed using donated interlocking bricks. Likewise, windows and doors have been made from old wood.
Valuable Lesson To Learn
What this adorable house teaches everyone is that larger than life dreams can be realized with unity and sheer dedication. The one wanting to build a giant luxurious house can donate some amounts to those who are in dire need of funds for building a regular house. Furthermore, it would be a huge comfort for families that are struggling financially, especially in the context of the present soaring prices of building supplies.
The Bottom Line...
A common man's dream came true with unity, solidarity and the power of crowdfunding. Crowdfunding has been playing a significant role in realising many such dreams as Shaijumon's. A cause, its story and its need for support reach millions of individuals and organizations across the world at a time. People around the globe can donate and contribute to the cause across geographical borders, from the comfort of their homes. Isn't it digital magic?!
