5 Ways to Celebrate World Health Day on April 7th 2023

At the World Health Organization’s (WHO) First World Health Assembly in 1948, it was decided that the 7th of April, with effect from 1950, will be celebrated as World Health Day. The date of 7th April was chosen because it marks the foundation of WHO in 1948.

The 2023 World Health Day also marks the 75th anniversary of WHO, and the theme for this year is ‘Health For All’. WHO has selected various themes in the past like ‘Safe Motherhood’, ‘Mental Health’ etc. This year, WHO seems to shift its focus on universal access to health care, and we cannot applaud this move more. Various variants like geography, race, religion, gender, caste, education, finance etc act as a barrier to health care, and we should make moves to eliminate these obstacles.

The question now arises, what can you as a layman do to leave an impact on this World Health Day? Here are five ideas you can use to celebrate World Health Day

  1. Fund an underprivileged's patient treatment

It could be your house servant’s child or some distant relative. It doesn’t matter. You can use your wealth to make sure that some needy person gets access to the health care they deserve. You would not only be helping the patient but their whole family. You can be the light in someone’s dark moment.

  1. Crowdfund for a patient

Most of the time, health care can be super expensive. There are treatments which cost lakhs of rupees, which cannot be amassed by you alone. So what do you do at such a juncture? Simple! you can start a crowdfunding campaign online or even in your vicinity. A community effort can do wonders for a patient, and help them get the treatment they need.

  1. Donate to an NGO

Various NGOs work day and night to make a difference in society. But they have to struggle due to a lack of funding. You can give them a helping hand, by making a donation to them. This will lift their spirits, and help them to expand their pool of help. You can even campaign for an NGO of your choice to increase its reach and presence.

  1. Raise awareness about racial and other societal obstacles when it comes to healthcare

A lot of people are oblivious when it comes to the barriers one can face due to their skin colour, gender, religion or caste. A person belonging to a minority community has more chances of facing discrimination than a person belonging to the majority, which is not known to many people. For example, Infant Mortality Rate and Anemic rates are higher in Dalit populations than in the general category. You can use your social media presence to highlight such statistics to make people aware of such societal barriers.

  1. Be an example, by adopting a healthy lifestyle

Commit to a healthy lifestyle by having proper nutritious meals and regular exercise. Share your results and transformation with the people around you. You can be an inspiration to everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This will also keep you fit and fine as well.
