Migrant workers, who come from the tribal belts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, have been found to live in subhuman conditions inside the garment factories operating out of the Narol industrial belt of Ahmedabad, India. Some Industrial unit workers are not offered any separate space to live.

The factory doesn’t have space to do any sort of daily activities like sleeping, cooking, bathing. There is a big issue with safety and hygiene while considering living in these working spaces. Moreover, the workers are either not paid any overtime, or are paid very little of it. These migrant workers have to work for more than 18 hours due to which they face a large number of health concerns like sleeplessness, exhaustion, along with chemicals entering their food and water. Also, these workers are subjected to workplace hazard, with an open-drain flowing inside the factory right next to where they live. The families of these labourers also live in appalling conditions.

Considering the conditions of migrant workers in Narol, Yashoda Mehta trust, a Mumbai based NGO has decided to construct a Medical dispensary for the migrant workers in the Narol area. In this dispensary there will be qualified doctors and nurses to undertake medical check-ups and for providing consultancy and medical help to these migrant workers and their families. The planned dispensary will be housed in a space having an area of at least 500 sq ft. The cost for buying 500 sqft premises in the Narol area is around Rupees 98.5 lakhs. The capital expenditure like medical equipment, ambulance, furnishings, medicines as well as the overhead costs like Doctors & staff salary will be taken care of by Yashoda Mehta trust from its revenue sources like Bank FD interest, donations from the existing donors and corporate donors.

Requesting each one of you to donate generously for the cause of these migrant workers in Ahmedabad as each donation received will help us in our initiative and make life a little easier for these workers and their families. Yashoda Mehta trust is a Mumbai based NGO established 25 years ago and over the years has been active in the field of education and healthcare especially for working classes staying in the slums. In the last few years, the trust has organized medical camps in rural and slum areas besides distributing books, uniforms and educational items to children.
