Help the children of the biggest slum in Asia get a better future

Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which is considered to be one of Asia's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometers and a population of about 1 million. With a population density of over 277,136/km, Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Dharavi is currently a highly diverse settlement religiously and ethnically. Dharavi has an active informal economy in which numerous household enterprises employ many of the slum residents —leather, textiles and pottery products are among the goods made inside Dharavi.

However for the majority of the poor residents of Dharavi, education is the only sign of hope. The parents want to provide good education to their children, preferably in English medium schools as they see it as a ticket to get out of the slum environment. It has to be noted that basic education is the backbone for the community as it helps in alleviating poverty and improving their lives. Also when children receive education they have more career choices and also can make informed decisions about personal finances, political and social events which improve the quality of their life.

The Mother Theresa Charitable Trust, a Non profitable trust which was started with a vision of providing education to poor children in Dharavi started a school in 2006 with just 30 students and a kindergarten section with plans to continue the education for these children for higher classes. Over the last 18 years the school has grown to have classes’ up to Xth standard and student strength of 1000 students.

However the only challenge the school has been facing is that the school is run from temporary makeshift structures lacking in infrastructure like properly ventilated classrooms, proper sanitation facilities like toilets, sports facilities and audio-visual classrooms . In fact, in the school of 1000 students there are only 2 toilets which are used by teachers and students. Since the infrastructure limits the proper all round development of the school students, the trust has plans to purchase a plot and construct a school building with proper infrastructure. As Dharavi is located in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, the minimum cost of a school building is    Rs 10 crore and the breakup of the cost is given below.

Requesting each one of you to kindly donate so that Mother Theresa Charitable Trust can fulfill its dream of providing quality education to these poor children of Dharavi.

Mother Theresa trust is the non-governmental organization established with multiple tasks which are mainly focused on education and to improve the quality of life of marginalized populations. Mother Theresa Trust is located in Dharavi and initially began with the approach of community children to have tutorial classes. Which has led to the opening of a school, and the marginalized sections prefer to enroll their children in Mother Theresa School to have a better quality of education.
