Dharavi a.k.a “Asia’s largest slum” is in fact a heart-shaped agglomeration of primarily informal settlements located in the heart of Mumbai, India’s commercial capital. The population in the slums is estimated around 1 million, with an average of 3,50,000 habitants per km. Dharavi is a juxtaposition of neighborhoods with their own distinct character that was shaped by the various waves of migrants that came from all four corners of India. Being the largest slum in Asia, Dharavi has to face various economic, social and educational hurdles. To address the situation, an enthusiastic teacher Shree Baburao Mane started the Mahatma Phule Education Trust in the year 1983 and established the Chatrapati Shivaji Vidyalaya in the year 1996 to provide quality education to underprivileged children living in the slums. Today this school is a “Beam of Light '' igniting a hope of better life through education to the poor in Dharavi.

Since March 2020, Maharashtra has seen several spells of lockdown to fight against Coronavirus. This pandemic has severely hit the poor classes of Dharavi the hardest. . About 90% of the parents of the school children working in different sectors are jobless and wageless. As a result, parents have been unable to pay school fees, in spite of it, the school continues to provide online education to students.

However due to lack of funds from fee collection, the school is in distress. The trust is running pre-primary, primary and secondary school in four different mediums under the name of Raje Shivaji Vidyalay where the total teaching staff is 82 and a college which has 20 teachers. Currently all sections run daily online classes and the total monthly expenditure is Rs 14,05,000 . To keep the school from drifting for at least the next four months the school needs Rs 56,20,000.
